Zanjeer (English: Shackles; titled Thoofan in Telugu) is a 2013 Indian action film directed by Apoorva Lakhia, shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu. The film marks the Bollywood debut of Tollywood actor Ram Charan in the lead role along with Priyanka Chopra. Prakash Raj joins the cast after success in Hindi films, like Wanted, Singham, and Dabangg 2. It is a remake of the 1973 Hindi film of the same name. The Hindi version of the film is to be dubbed in Chinese as Chialo Kaxlaug. The Telugu version of the film was dubbed in Tamil and Malayalam. The film opened up with mixed, but mostly negative reviews and failed to do the magic at the box office in both Telugu and Hindi.

Summary

As per John Abraham, "Madras Cafe brings us closer to what changed the political history of India." The film, set in India and Sri Lanka, is a political spy thriller with the backdrop of the Sri Lankan civil war. Major Vikram Singh (John Abraham) is an Indian Army special officer who is appointed by the intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing to head covert operations in Jaffna shortly after Indian peace-keeping force was forced to withdraw.  As he journeys to Sri Lanka, with the intention of disrupting the LTF rebels, he becomes entangled in rebel and military politics. There he meets a British journalist (Jaya Sahni) who wants to reveal the truth about the civil war, and in the process he uncovers a conspiracy to assassinate "a former Indian prime minister".

"The film is a work of fiction, but it is based on research into real events, it has a resemblance to actual political events, dealing with civil war and the ideology of a rebel group.", said director Sirkar.

Sircar says he needed an actor who can easily get lost in the crowd but with John Abraham it seems next to impossible. "The role also requires a certain level of physicality and John Abraham has worked for the role. I agree this is a new territory for him but I think he has pitched it right. Let's see how the audiences take him."

"Nargis Fakhri is playing a foreign war correspondent. I needed a girl who looks Indian journalist but has an accent so there is no chance that audience will remember her Rockstar performance while watching Madras Café. She will converse in English and she is familiar with the language," says Sircar.

Story

The story starts with both Akaash and Vani leaving their house to go to college. Vani catches her train on the other hand Akaash travels by a truck as he misses his train. As they reach their the next day Vaani says "I love you" to Akaash. Akaash replies to this in a filmy way and both of them become friends.They also make friends with two other people. Slowly, Akaash and Vani fall in love with each other and continue a 4 year relationship. However, Akaash has to leave to go to London for studies and Vani returns to Dehradun to attend her sister's wedding. She tells her sister about her relationship but she reacts with a negative response. However, the next day her family finds out that her sister has eloped with some other guy and her parents are heart broken. In the fear of society's response they decide to get Vani married. However, Vani has to agree to this and breaks up with Akaash unwillingly. Akaash is also heart broken with this. Vaani gets married with an arrogant man and he forcefully has sex with her every night. All Vani can do is cry and she loses faith in herself. Vani thinks that she can't bear anymore with her husband and returns back home. However,her parents sent her back. A week later, Vani's mama/mami come to visit her and take her back to Delhi for a week to have fun with her friends. There she sees Akaash and they spend some time together. After a week, Vani realizes that she loves Akaash dearly and cannot live without him still she returns back to Delhi. Akaash on the other hand can't lose Vani anymore and travels to Delhi without telling her. All her friends meet at Delhi and go with her to her house. There they meet her and Akaash explains to her that today she can divorce him if she wants. Vani tells her parents that she wants a divorce and they are stunned. A whole family fight happens and Vani leaves the house. Later, Akaash and Vani get married.

Summary:

The movie begins with Niya (Doyel Dhawan) watching a video of herself and her father. Niya is the daughter of Maya (Bipasha Basu) and Abhay (Nawazuddin Siddiqui). Maya and Abhay are divorced. Maya and Niya live with Maya's mother (Shernaz Patel) and father (Shiv Kumar Subramaniam). Niya is unaware of the fact that her father is dead. Maya deliberately hides the truth from her as Niya is a sensitive child and worships her father. Things start getting bizarre when Paras, Niya's classmate who gives her a hard time in school, ends up dead after he pulled Niya's hair. Same thing happens to Niya's class teacher Mrs. Sinha who complains about Niya. Moreover Niya starts talking to her absent father. Maya is concerned about the absurd change in Niya's behaviour and hence takes her for counseling. It is revealed in the counseling session that Abhay was a hot tempered man. He loses out on his job and friends because of his frequent and violent bouts of anger. Abhay also suspects Maya of having an affair with a colleague. However he loves his daughter more than anything else. After Abhay starts beating up Maya, she files for a divorce and gets the sole custody of Niya. Abhay cannot bear this and threatens Maya that he will take Niya away from her. Shortly after the hearing, Abhay dies in a car accident. After the session, the counselor (Mohan Kapoor) advices Maya to take Niya out for the weekend. The mother daughter duo go to Panchgani where Abhay possesses Niya and tells Maya that he will take Niya with him. Maya comes back to Mumbai and consults a pandit (Darshan Jariwala) who tells Maya that as long as Maya and Niya share a strong bond of love, Abhay won't be able to kill either Maya or Niya. Some time later, the counselor tries to convince Niya that her father is dead. Shortly after, the counselor is found dead in his clinic. Later, Abhay kills Maya's friend and frames Maya. Maya is admitted into a mental health facility. Maya's mother calls the pandit home for a havan, which is interrupted by Abhay. He kills the pandit, possesses his body and kills Maya's mother. Maya, in a desperate bid to save her daughter kills herself as she remembers the pandit's words that no mortal man can fight an Aatma. Maya becomes a spirit and saves Niya just as Abhay is about to kill her. She also destroys Abhay's spirit, thus ensuring Niya's safety for the rest of her life. In an epilogue, Niya is shown celebrating her eighteenth birthday while Maya's spirit fondly watches her.
